Goodpasture is preparing to bring back a well–known tradition this year in the 2025 edition of the Lip Dub.
Two months ago, art teacher Steven Hayes announced that the school would continue this tradition, with this year’s theme being the 80s.
“I chose the 80s theme because I love 80s music, and I have been sitting on the idea for many years,” Mr. Hayes said. “I didn’t have the opportunity to do it until now. 80s music is so good and so classic. I also like it because now we know which songs have stood the test of time. Modern music does not offer that yet.”
In the past, Goodpasture has done many Lip Dubs from Disney, 90s, Boy Bands, and many more. During this event, dozens of students around the school rally together to perform snippets of songs.
”I was looking for something that would bring needed joy to our school year, especially since we have been faced with challenging moments and tremendous loss,” Mr. Hayes said. “It is good to incorporate things in our school year that everyone can take part in simply to have a little fun.
The lip dub is a one-take event, where the camera will walk through the whole school three times, and one of the runs will be selected to be published.
This year’s Lip Dub will showcase many songs such as “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” by Cyndi Lauper, “Never Gonna Give You Up,” by Rick Astley, “Don’t Stop Believing,” by Journey, and many more songs.
Students around campus are excited to participate in this event.
“I signed up for the Lip Dub because I thought it’d be a cool event to end my senior year with,” senior Jayden Jones, who will be in the song “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince said. “I’m most excited to dress up in a silly costume and sing with my friends.”
Along with Jones, junior Corrie Gallina is also looking forward to the film date.
“I always loved watching these things in elementary school, so I thought it would be fun to actually be in one,” Gallina, who will be in “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi, said. “I can’t wait to get in costume and use the props.”
Along with them, this year’s Lip Dub has many talented assistant directors working behind the scenes to make this year’s event a success.
“I think my favorite part has been getting to see people who are normally reserved come out of their shell,” senior Taylor Duke said. “I love seeing people try something new.”
Another assistant director, freshman Olivia Parker has been enjoying the rehearsal process.
“The process of going through rehearsals has been fun,” Parker said. “I’m looking forward to the day we walk through the halls and film it.”
Soon the halls will be lined with colorful decorations and students will be dressed up and ready to perform the setlist.
Students have been working in rehearsals for this event over the past few weeks and will continue in lunch rehearsals. The Lip Dub will be filmed in April following Goodpasture’s Spring Break.
Overall, students are working hard to bring the 80s to life this spring, and many students around campus say they are looking forward to this year’s Lip Dub.
