Students taking pictures for last years fall dance
As the fall season approaches, one question weighs heavy on students’ minds: when will this year’s fall dance be? This question was answered on Sept. 22 when, after many polls, it was announced that this year’s fall dance will take place on Oct. 25.
On Sept. 2, a poll was sent out to Goodpasture’s high school students giving them the option to choose between a fall dance, a Fall Ball, or a Coming Home dance. The Fall Ball and fall dance had a virtual tie. This situation led to a run-off poll being sent out on Sept. 5.
“Fall dance attendance has dwindled every year,” Dr. Amanda Binkley said. “So we felt like it might be time to offer some fresh options to see if people would enjoy something different.”
According to the poll, the fall dance would be a semi-formal dance in the high school gym. There would be a DJ and a photobooth for students to use.
On the other hand, the Fall Ball would be a casual, outdoor event including fall-centered activities such as a hayride and a cookout with smores, alongside a movie and an outdoor dance floor.
The final votes on the poll showed that the number of students voting in favor of the Fall Ball were very close to the amount voting for the Fall Dance.
Senior Jordyn Wright voted in favor of the Fall Ball.
“I voted for the Fall Ball because I wanted to do something different this year,” Wright said. “I really enjoyed the Back to School Bash, and it seemed like a fall-themed version of that.”
Other students also favored the idea of a Fall Ball over a fall dance.
“I felt like the atmosphere would be better at the Fall Ball,” freshman Liam Reid said. “Also, I wasn’t planning on going to the dance anyway.”
On the other hand, senior Rachel Denman voted for the fall dance.
“I voted for the fall dance because it’s my senior year, and I really want to make memories like I have in the past three years,” Denman said.
Sophomore Ryder Ballou shared the same sentiment.
“I’d rather take my girlfriend to dance than watch a movie,” Ballou said. “I could just do that at home.”
Soon after the first run-off poll revealed that the Fall Ball had the most votes, some students spoke out against it.
Many seniors who had Senior Service during their first period on the day of the run-off weren’t made aware that the poll was going on.
“I spoke to some seniors and a lot of them didn’t fully understand what they were voting for or didn’t know that the poll was going on,” senior Auburn Haun said.
After hearing the student’s complaints, another run-off poll was sent out on Sept. 17.
“I wanted to do something that you guys wanted to do since it’s your event,” Dr. Binkley said. “We wanted to make sure we honored the opinion of the students.”
The final results of the second run-off poll revealed that Goodpasture will be having a fall dance on Oct. 25 from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m..
“I’m very, very excited that I get to have a Fall Dance during my last year, it’s going to be so much fun!” Denman said.
