The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. during an earlier government shutdown in 2013.
On Oct. 1 2025, the federal government shut down because of a delayed funding deal. Why does this happen? What effects will take place with this shutdown? Who’s to blame?
According to CBS, essentially, the reason for this shutdown is due to lawmakers not agreeing on extended federal funding, specifically the Obamacare tax credits, and this standoff between the two parties has resulted in a federal shutdown.
On the other hand, essential workers like physicians, nurses, air traffic control specialists, border patrol agents, customs officers, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and firefighters are legally inclined to work; however they may not receive pay for a long duration of time.
The shutdown is affecting Americans, and specifically the Goodpasture Community. The shutdown has caused issues in jobs, travel, mail, national parks, and healthcare.
For example, middle school principal Dr. Daniel Knox has had to reschedule the highly-anticipated LBL (Land Between the Lakes) trip that sixth grade students participate in.
Furthermore, if Goodpasture families wanted to visit museums like the Smithsonian for fall break, it would be impossible because Smithsonian’s are federally funded by the government and would be shut down.
While Republicans and Democrats are quick to blame the other party for the shutdown, polling results from USA Today have shown that Americans believe Republicans are more at blame, which, in turn, reflects on President Trump and Vice President Vance.
Although Republicans are more at blame for initiating the shutdown, the Democrats tally was indecisive and unclear, which shows that Democratic unity is weak toward voting for the Obamacare tax.
As of Oct. 3, there is still a filibuster happening in the senate. According to NBC, Democrats are using the 60 required votes against the Republicans. If there are 60 votes then it would end the filibuster and pass the legislation.
Ultimately, both sides can end this stand-off with the power to vote. However, according to NBC, there are no signs of the party leaders meeting, and that this shutdown is expected to last another week.
