As the leaves change color and temperatures begin to drop, GCS fall sports are coming to a close. Golf, girls’ soccer, volleyball, and football have ended, while football and cross country wraps up today.
With a new coach and only four seniors, GCS varsity football ended the season of this building year with a record of 0-10 and one more district game against Davidson on Friday, Oct 25.
“Even though it might not be the outcome you want, you have to have fun and remember it’s a game,” junior running back Shynon Dawkins said. “Don’t let others’ attitude affect yours.”
The 2024 football season motto is all about commitment; commitment to the team, to each other, and to the game.
“We say ‘commit’ after all the meetings in the team room,” junior punter Conner Bell said.
Others also had an optimistic attitude about the future.
“We have a lot to learn and a good future,” junior Ian Thomas Crocket said after stating his favorite memory of the team was playing kickball during summer training.
Varsity girls and boy’s golf seasons are both completed; the girls achieved second in the district, advancing to regionals, and junior Ava Hayes finished twelfth at the TSSAA Golf State Championships.
“I am very grateful for receiving the award because I truly work hard at golf and being recognized for my hard work and dedication is wonderful,” Hayes said.
Other team members made important contributions as well.
Senor Daniel Whitman finished his final season with GCS by being one shot away from qualifying for the state tournament. Whitman will continue his golf career at Freed Hardeman University next year.
“I already know a lot of the guys on the team, and I’m loo king forward to playing college golf,” Whitman said.
The varsity girl’s soccer team ended their season on Oct. 5 with a record of seven wins, seven losses, and one tie.
“Our theme for this year is to meet the standard,” junior center back Emma Cate Fontenot said. “No matter what team we play, we play to our standard.”
Senor Charleigh Grace McKinnon and junior Sydney Morris were both selected to the D2-A District 4 All-District team.
“I work outside of school a lot and have personal training,” Morris said after ending the season with thirty-five goals and six assists.
Boys and girls varsity cross country teams ran their last guaranteed race on Oct 29.
Freshman Ally Myers placed tenth overall and will continue on to the Division 2A Girls Cross Country State Meet on Nov 8.
Other team members also ended the season happy with their own performances.
“As a senior and with this being my last season running, I am content with my performance at all of the meets and all of the hard work that I have put into practice and preparation,” Max Head said.
