Coming Home is an event put on by the Student Council sponsors each January to honor the boys who represent their grade the best.
Each grade goes through two rounds of voting, one with all the boys in the grade and one with the top 5. Through this, they narrow it down to two boys who are chosen based on the criteria of their Christ-like attitude, academic skills, and overall the way that they embody the mission of Goodpasture.
This year’s Coming Home was held on Jan. 17 in the high school gym between the girls’ and boys’ basketball games.
Each grade honors two boys with the exception of the senior class that has three. This is because during the ceremony one of the three senior nominees will be crowned the Coming Home King. The king is not just voted on by the senior class, but also the underclassmen.
Coming Home has many rich traditions that are on display during the ceremony, with one of these being the king’s crown. The coming home king, when announced, will be presented with a large, red crown to wear. This crown was laid on over 20 high school boys’ heads before this year, so getting to wear the crown is a big honor.
When asked about her favorite part of Coming Home, Student Council Coordinator Ms. Keith said, “The thing that stands out about Coming Home is the surprise factor. Unlike Homecoming, where you already know who the queen is, you find out that night.” Furthermore, Keith said, “It’s fun to see students cheering on their peers who were voted.”
The boys that represented the freshman class were Jackson Grizzard and Kedric Vance. Grizzard is a member of the baseball team and the National Junior Honor Society. He was escorted by Freshman class vice-president Hattie Mae Head. Vance was escorted by Freshman class president Adelaide Moss.
Furthermore, the sophomore class representatives were Nate Starks and Uriah Williams. Starks is a member of the football and baseball teams. He is also a member of the FCA and the National Junior Honor Society. He was escorted by Sophomore class vice-president Elise Gardener. Williams is a member of the basketball team, FCA, and Beta Club. He was escorted by Junior class treasurer Presley Cavender.
Continuing on, Daylin Alford and Connor Bell were voted for the Junior Class. Alford is a member of FCA along with being a part of the track and basketball team. He was escorted by Student Body Vice President Faith Ivy. Bell is a member of the soccer and football teams. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club and serves as an FCA officer. He was escorted by Student Body Secretary Hannah Billingsley.
Lastly, the three Senior representatives were Max Head, Rylan Moses, and Daniel Whitman. Head is a member of the cross country team along with being captain of the tennis team. He is also an FCA officer, Beta Club officer, and member of the National Honor Society. He was escorted by senior representative Elyse Seats. Moses is the senior class treasurer, FCA vice president, and student ambassador. He is also a member of the Beta Club, National Honor Society, and the Varsity Baseball team. He was also recently voted Mr. GCS by the class of 2025. He was escorted by Senior class president Ella Garrett. Whitman is a member of the basketball, baseball, and golf teams. He also is a member of the National Honor Society and FCA. He was escorted by senior vice president Janey Philips.
While all these seniors were voted as representatives of their grade, Rylan Moses was voted Coming home king by his peers. All in all, Coming home is a good celebration of people who work very hard to let their character reflect that of Christ.
Keiths the thing that makes it stand out is the surprise factor. Hoco you know, the reveal is exciting. Fun to see the peers supporting the people who voted in their grade.
