Super Bowl LIX had an array of interesting events occur throughout the entire broadcast. From the game to commercials, or even the halftime show, this Super Bowl was unlike any else.
This year the Chiefs, two-time defending champs, were taking on the Eagles. A rematch of Super Bowl LIIX, where the Chiefs beat the Eagles 38-35 in an enthralling matchup.
The Chiefs were hoping to win this game to become the first NFL team to have a 3-peat, building their already incredible legacy from the last few years. This matchup was expected to be a close battle between two fierce competitors trying to be World Champions.
As it turns out, the game was a one-sided blowout led by Jalen Hurts, who won Super Bowl MVP.
The Eagles’ defense came out strong in the first half by shutting out the Chiefs and even returning an interception for a touchdown. The Eagles air game was also impressive with hurts throwing for 221 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Eagles’ defense held strong until late in the 4th quarter when they gave up two long touchdowns thrown by Patrick Mahomes. The final score of the game was 40-22.
The sports world was shocked by the outcome of this game, given the Chiefs’ dominance throughout the season.
“I’m very disappointed in the outcome because I thought we had the opportunity to send a statement out that we were the best to ever do it,” Chiefs fan Langston Patton said.
On the other hand, there are many Eagles fans who are exhilarated by the outcome.
“I felt really good because I’ve been supporting them my whole life, and it was amazing to see them win for the second time ever,” freshman Jaxon Smolarski said.
A big storyline about this year’s Super Bowl was the relationship between Travis Kelce, the Chiefs’ tight end, and global pop star Taylor Swift. There have been conspiracy theories that Travis would propose to Taylor after the Super Bowl, but the loss may have contributed to the lack of proposals.
During the Super Bowl, there were many fascinating and sometimes funny commercials that brought viewers to even watch the game.
“I thought they were pretty lame and have been so much better in the past,” said Caroline Batson
The halftime show was performed by Kendrick Lamar whose popularity this past year has grown even more because of the Drake controversy. Many Kendrick fans watched the game just to see his halftime show, and reactions to it were very mixed.
“I thought it was disappointing,” said senior Sam Osborne. “I had better expectations, but I know he’s not a good performer. He played good songs, but he could’ve done a little better. That’s about what you expect at a Super Bowl”
