With a new year comes new things and this school year is no exception. One major change this school year in particular has affected all faculty and students across the high school and people have mixed opinions about it.
For a long time, high schoolers at Goodpasture have had mandatory time set apart for devotional every single day. Just in the past few years intervention has been added to the end of devo to give students the opportunity to get extra help from a teacher, make up missing schoolwork, or just have a break in the middle of the day.
This year, devotional and intervention have looked different. High school students now follow a schedule where Mondays and Wednesdays have an extended intervention time, and Tuesdays and Fridays are extended devotional. This allows for 40 minutes of devotional or intervention depending on the day, contradictory to the 20 minutes of allotted time in previous years.
“I personally like having devo everyday,” said sophomore Adelaide Moss. “I do now enjoy the longer devos, but personally I don’t think the longer intervention is necessary.”
Moss shared her solution to this saying, “I feel like we could have three days of longer devo and only one day of extended intervention. Half the time people are just sitting around playing on their Chromebooks, and we could be using that time to further our faith.” Moss added, “The one day of intervention could be in the middle of the week for students who need it.”
Junior Elise Gardner said, “I don’t like the new change very much. I think it is kind of a waste of time and on the days we have devo I think it will cause students to pay less attention because we are there for so long.” Gardner added, “I was also just upset that that everyday devo got taken away because I feel as though it is the biggest thing we do to keep faith incorporated daily throughout our school.”
Senior Jameson Webb similarly said, “I liked that we used to have time for devo everyday. I also just don’t like it because it makes our schedule super confusing, and it gives seniors a shorter lunch some days.”
Overall students and staff are slowly learning to work with this change. While there are mixed emotions around it, one thing is certain- change is always a learning experience and this new schedule is just that.
