On Thursday, March 20, Amazon MGM presented to audiences an instant classic hit, “Project Hail Mary.”
The movie kicked off its opening weekend with over $141 million at the box office and has now grossed more than $500 million.
The movie stars Ryan Gosling as middle school science teacher Ryland Grace and Sandra Hüller as a scientist named Eva Stratt.
The movie opens with Ryland waking up in a spaceship, without his memories of how he got onto the ship, only to discover that all of his crewmates are deceased. He finds out that he is light-years away from Earth. He explores the ship, trying to find a way home, and he finds the pilot’s seat.
Along the journey back home, Ryland comes across another spaceship and meets an alien named Rocky. They bond, and Ryland makes a translator for Rocky, since Rocky speaks a different language.
Additionally, Ryland makes a sphere for Rocky to go on his ship because he can’t breathe the air Ryland can breathe.
Later in the movie, Rocky makes a heroic sacrifice to save Ryland, but at first, it seems Rocky has died. Rocky left a blood trail to get back to his sphere, and it looks like he died, but with help from Ryland, he comes back to life.
The two had to depart after Rocky felt better, until Ryland was faced with either going back home or being with Rocky for the rest of his life.
In the movie, there were flashbacks to before Ryland goes to space, showing how he was selected to do Project Hail Mary.
The first flashback was him teaching at Grover Cleveland Middle School, and the final flashback was him being forced onto the spacecraft.
Ryland Grace is a dynamic character. In the beginning of the movie, he wants to go home and is selfish, but by the end of the movie, he makes a selfless choice and goes to Rocky’s planet.
Giving Ryland an alien as a best friend was a good choice, and it made Gosling’s performance incredible because he is mostly talking to a prop rather than an actor or actress.
I think everyone should watch the movie because it is well-written and a well-executed two-hour and thirty-minute movie.
Overall, the best part of the movie was when Rocky sacrificed himself to save Ryland. Also, the music score was phenomenal and enhanced some scenes. The visual effects were really well done and improved the in-theatre experience with their vibrant colors.
