PEG Competitions are a fun and engaging way for middle school students at Goodpasture to let out their competitive side. This game-show style competition was started because of the amazing legacy Mrs. Peggy Roberts left on the Goodpasture community.
“She was an amazing teacher and was here for a long time. She was always willing to help and very competitive,” eighth grade English teacher Darlene Sweet said. “She was all about encouraging teachers, which is why PEG was named after her.”
Mrs. Roberts developed cancer and eventually passed away from it. Even through her fight with cancer, however, she still showed to be her same, fierce self.
“She developed cancer and still was so positive, saying she’ll beat cancer and just had such a winning spirit,” Mrs. Sweet added. “She was a basketball coach, so it makes sense she’d always have that game winning attitude.”
PEG is composed of many games played all throughout the school year during devotional. Field day in the spring is dedicated to just the PEG competitions.
PEG brings out a competitive spirit throughout the 6, 7, and 8 grades, according to eighth grader Barret Gates.
“My favorite part of PEG is just the competition,” Gates said.
This series of competition is something memorable for students, a highlight of their middle school years.
“When I was in middle school I enjoyed nuke ‘em and tug of war,” ninth grader Mason Vanns said. “I was team green and we won.”
While middle schoolers have a lot of fun winning, there must always be a loser too. Losing teams encourage their peers and competition just like how Mrs. Roberts would.
“My favorite part about PEG is winning, but my team doesn’t win very much,” eighth grader Betty Williams said. “It’s nice to see how excited the winning teams get though.”
Current standings are green team in first, followed by pink, blue, orange, black, white, purple, red and then yellow.
