As the newest group to join Goodpasture, Esports is making headway as another promising sports team. Practicing four days a week, they hope to make it to playoffs on Nov. 20.
In the last decade, Esports has become a more popular extracurricular among schools. Over 170 colleges and universities offer Esports scholarships nowaday. With it becoming so popular, Goodpasture has decided to keep up with the times
The Esports season starts with a two-week pre-season, during which the coaches decide who is good at what game, who will start, and who will sub in. This takes place in the last two weeks of September. Their playing season started Sep. 30 and will last until Nov. 15.
For every competition, they will enter the room, log in, and be randomly paired with other high schools in the central time zone.
“It is exciting to see who they will get matched with,” Coach Tammy Applegate said, “We’ve been paired with schools in Kansas, Iowa, and Arkansas. It’s someplace new every time.
Being such a new addition to the Goodpasture community, there have been many pros and cons.
“It brings people together to learn how to work as a team and not solo,” Ms. Applegate said,” It allows people who are normally unable to participate in an athletic sport to be a part of something.”
Esports has also had some conflicts in their seasons so far. Some participants have had trouble scheduling their athletic sports around their Esports times. They also have struggled to make their stance as a real sport.
As the season goes a long, Goodpasture hopes to see the Esports team excel in what they do hand hopefully bring back some wins form the playoffs.
